Course Offerings

Boys' Concert Choir: This group is open to any 6th-8th grade boy who loves to sing or who wants to learn to sing.  This group is a year-long course, it is not auditioned and students can sign-up multiple years.  This group focuses on developing vocal and performance skills.  A strong emphasis is placed on the development of proper vocal techniques, rhythmic and melodic music reading skills, and ensemble singing.  Members are required to perform in the winter and spring concerts and may be given the opportunity to participate in local and district festivals as determined by the director.

Girls' Concert Choir: This group is open to any 6th-8th grade girl who loves to sing or who wants to learn to sing.

Intermediate Choral Ensemble: An auditioned group designed for boys and girls in 7th and 8th grade who have finished their first year of beginning chorus.  These students expected to improve their vocal technique, vocal range, and performance skills, while learning a diverse palette of songs.  Despite popular belief, the music in this course is not simple.  Students in this course are given the opportunity to audition for NC Middle School Honors Chorus and NC Middle School All-State Chorus. Intermediate Choir normally participates in WCPSS annual ACE Festival.

Advanced Choral Ensemble: An auditioned group designed for boys and girls in the 7th and 8th grade who are skilled singers and musicians.  The choir sings a wide variety of choral music including standard classics, popular American music, and music originating from other cultures.  The music in this course is extremely challenging and requires a great deal of dedication.  This year-long choir is performance-based that requires numerous performances throughout the year, including Winter and Spring Concerts, Winter Festival, Pieces of Gold Auditions, and District Choral Festival.  Students in this course are also given the opportunity to audition for NC Middle School Honors Chorus and NC Middle School All-State Chorus.  Students continue developing good vocal production and performance practice skills, as well as honing their sight-reading and independent singing ability.  Musical teamwork, self-confidence, and a sense of accomplishment characterize what the singer realizes from the choral experience.

Music and You:  This course is designed for 6th-8th grade students who are interested in learning about music without participating in a performance ensemble.  The course allows students to explore their own musical values by listening to a variety of different musical styles and thinking about how music affects the world around them.  Music and You is a semester-long course.

Intro to Guitar and World Music (Exploratory):  This is a semester-long course for 6th-8th grade boys and girls who are interested in learning how to play the guitar. This class is a new elective offered and focuses on basic techniques in playing guitar, reading notes, and analyzing musical selections on the guitar.
