Greetings Parents and Guardians!
I hope this day finds you healthy and in positive spirits. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to all of our new families, and reacquaint with those whose students are continuing their education at East Millbrook Magnet Middle School for the 2009-2010 school year. My name is Cynthia Lieberman, and I am the Director of Dance and Creative Movement. I will be entering my third year with the EMMMS team, and I am truly looking forward to sharing, learning and growing side by side with your student.
I have an eclectic and diverse background in Dance and movement studies. My interests and experience both professionally and personally span a wide breadth of genres including: brain/body development, creative and conceptually based dance, West African, a variety of modern dance techniques, various mind/body centering therapies and techniques, yoga, Pilates, dance history, dance for social change, environmental awareness and humane education, somatics, spiritual Dance and movement as a mode of support and a foundation for learning additional core curricula.
The Dance curriculum at EMMMS is based on the National Standards for Dance in Education and is weighted heavily in the Creative/Conceptual approach to learning. This approach welcomes and enables students of all ability levels, shapes and personalities to explore their comfort zone, discover a newfound respect for their body and discover their own unique movement style. A conceptually based curriculum celebrates the beauty, uniqueness and individuality of every student. Further, it utilizes Howard Garder’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences and enhances our right/left brain hemispheric connections as we not only create, but are actively engaged in the creative process- observing, critiquing, assessing and building key emotional and social engagement.
I would like to invite every parent to take an active role in learning about the importance of movement in education and in our daily lives. Feel free to ask questions and read about or do further research on the different modalities that will be implemented in class. Our website will be an active, ongoing group effort and will be a wonderful educational tool and avenue for discussions with your student about what he or she may be learning.
Unfortunately, we are facing a time where learning about, understanding and respecting our bodies has become an absolute must for survival. As a society, we have become disconnected with our bodies which places us at great risk where health, brain development and survival skills are concerned. Dance in education provides an appreciation and understanding of the powerful role of movement in our lives.
Once again,I look forward to meeting each of you over the next few months. I have an open door policy and I love to discuss my curriculum and future ideas. Do not hesitate to call me with any questions you may have, I would be more than happy to set up a time for a meeting.
I wish each and every one of you peace and content. May the school year provide everything your student has hoped for and more.
May you sing, love, laugh, dance, discover and create!
Fondly,
Cynthia Lieberman
